Learning safe medication administration happens with repeated exposure and training with technology in the practice lab and simulation settings.
Malone University School of Nursing was awarded grant funds from North Canton Medical Foundation to purchase equipment employing new technology that is in use in hospitals today.
This equipment includes a smart pump IV infusion system with two pump modules, and an automated medication dispensing cart which mimics what hospitals use. The cart has an electronic medication administration record and barcode scanning of wrist bands as well as fake medication. A laptop computer for learning how to chart electronic health records would also be purchased. And lastly, a workstation on wheels computer cart for the laptop.
The purchase of these pieces of equipment will help the students become competent in their skills and achieve the learning objectives necessary to graduate independent and confident nursing students who are capable of safe medication administration practices within our community.
